To shop for lingerie online successfully, judge shape and construction logic rather than photos alone — learn your sister size (the size with the same cup volume in a different band), consider ordering two sizes when trying an unfamiliar brand, and choose based on how a style suits your shape rather than how it looks on a model with a different body.
Does this sound familiar?… You hop online to treat yourself to some new lingerie, three hours later you have ten tabs open, items in every cart, and choosing which sets to commit to has you in a spin. Every single one is beautiful — the close-up shots, the lace detail, the model turning slightly to catch the light. You’re doing exactly what any discerning woman does: looking closely, comparing, trusting your eye. You already know what you like when you see it. What’s missing is the know-how to help you make the right choice, first time — the small handful of things a stylist knows to look for that turn “I think I like this” into “I know this will work.”
The one thing worth remembering before you click ‘add to cart’ again
…every photograph online has been styled, directed and edited to look wonderful — that’s the designer doing their job. What they can’t show you online is stretch, feel, or how the fabric will actually sit against your particular shape. The model’s stated size is information but, more often than not, a red herring — it tells you what worked for her body, not what will work for yours.
And here’s a detail I find genuinely fascinating: a single bra is built from around thirty-five individual components, all handmade — which is exactly the sort of detail that starts to answer what actually separates quality from a name you recognise.
So it makes total sense that each collection, each story from the same brand — same size, same cup, on paper identical — will all sit slightly different
Fabric changes it. Colour changes it (darker shades notoriously run tighter). The person who stitched it that day changes it, ever so slightly. And every micro tweak means it will sit differently on you too.
That’s not a manufacturing fault. That’s simply what beautifully made things are like. Once you know that, you stop shopping on faith alone and start shopping with intention.

So here’s what a stylist actually looks for when she shops for lingerie online — and how to apply it to your own scroll.
Sister sizing — your new favourite shopping tool.
Your cup volume stays constant while your band size moves up or down — so a 34C and a 32D are sister sizes, holding the same cup volume on a slightly smaller or larger frame. Whenever I’m working with a brand I haven’t fitted before, or I’m not yet certain how it behaves on a particular body, I’ll offer a client her usual size alongside its sister size. It’s not guesswork. It’s simply acknowledging that no two brands are ever quite the same — which is exactly why brand name alone rarely tells you what you need to know.
Let two sizes be a tool, not a compromise.
You don’t need to order every size in every colour. But when you’re trying a brand for the first time, ordering your usual size plus its sister size, trying both in the comfort of your own home, and keeping the one that earns its place is exactly how a stylist would approach it too.
The more you learn your own parameters — your shapes, your go-to styles, what makes you feel extraordinary, and how your favourite brands fit — the less you’ll need this. That instinct builds fast, and your confidence will too.
Shape matters most when you shop for lingerie online.
A garment can look wonderful on a model, and you might really love the style, but be honest — is the wisp of a non-wired bralette really going to work for you? Or is structure non-negotiable?
The description might declare that the model is the same size, but it’s essential to take shape into consideration too, because shape works differently on different bodies, and that’s simply the nature of lingerie.
If you take one thing from this: lingerie sizing isn’t complicated, but it is wonderfully complex — and understanding that complexity is what turns you from someone who scrolls and gives up, into someone who chooses and hits the Buy Now button with confidence.

I once worked with a client on what became a full lingerie edit — going through a beautiful, well-loved collection she’d built up over years. By the end, most of what was in that drawer had been passed on — recycled, donated, gone. Her taste was exceptional; but she’d never had the chance to see what properly fitting lingerie feels like on her actual body until that day.
The moment she put on the right piece, I watched it happen in real time — the band settling exactly where it should, the cup simply doing its job, and then that unmistakable moment where she caught her own reflection and started turning, side to side, really looking at herself. The same woman. The same exceptional taste — finally dressed in the fit, shapes, and styles that truly worked for her.
The right pieces are out there.
And I promise, that when you put them on, they’ll feel like they were made just fir you.
It’s simply a case of finding the lingerie that’s made for it — and now you know exactly what to look for.
